100 days of unadulterated fun

Yesterday was the 100th day at my sister's school (my sister, as in the teacher). So, they had this big party celebrating the 100th day and she commissioned me to volunteer so that the little monsters (err, children) wouldn't drive her totally insane. So, she had them decorate cupcakes. Even though I specifically told them not to mix the two types of icing together (chocolate and vanilla), I turned my head for just a minute and both icings instantaneously became a fusion of brown and white. Also, more sprinkles were on the floor and in their little unsanitary mouths than on the cupcakes. Here are some of the (much neater) examples: She also let them make necklaces with frootloops and yarn (everyone had to put 100 frootloops on their necklace). Here's mine: (Yes, I made one, okay!) But since I always insist on revelling in my "uniqueness"...I said "Aha! I will put 101 frootloops on mine instead of 100, like all the rest of you drones!" Needless to say, no one really noticed. It was interesting. Then today I spent the day at school like a fool. That rhymes. (On an unrelated note, if anyone has a computer they want to throw out or sell (for like, $40 or less), let me know.)

oh don't spend days in school like a fool
because of your "uniqueness", girl you rule
so don yourself with loops of froot
life's a gas so give a toot!

erm.

reminds me of my "I eat fool" poem ;P

.. one of the reasons why I say i'd never teach.

how do you commission someone to volunteer?

you should have stuck with the 100 fruitloops... and put some sort of a breaker after every 33.
then you could use it as a tasbih.

Umar said...

....now i'm laughing at the image of you sitting on a musallah, doing dhikr on a fruitloop tasbih

:D

Assalaamu Alaikum :)

Oh wow, I would love to work on little projects like that with teeny kids! Darn, I would have came to volunteer too :D

And Umar's suggestion is hilarious

anon, thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely check them out. Ahh the South Borden building is all too familiar. Shudder.

Aaliya, yeah she claims to be one apparently. She teaches at an Islamic school :)

Olde, hahaha thanks, that made me laugh out loud. I love your I Eat Fool poem!!

Maria, join the club :D

Umar, that is quite an interesting idea, but I'd probably eat them before I reached 99...and frootloops aren't good for you. If it was a bran flakes tasbih, I would consider it. In any case, tasbihs are bid'ah.

Sara, show them to me! Although... I'm broke, but hey :)

Squeeky, haha I'll let my sister know she's got a volunteer lined up. Let's see if you change your after the first day :P And oh yes, Umar is just absolutely hilarious.

tasbihs are bid'ah?!?!

pls tell me you're joking

It helps us accurately keep track of our dhikr.

Gawd! if that's bid'ah then almost everything on this planet can be considered bid'ah

you're not one of those types bid'ahing everything are you?

Umar said...

I distinctly remember reading about some of the Companions using strings with knots in them for dhikr... so it can't be bidah.

...although one made out of cereal might be.
:P

(I'm pretty sure she was joking though)

erm, anonymous, casting Asmaa as "bida'ing everything" is a tad hasty; else in the same vein one may say that you "halalizing" everything.

According to Usool-al-fiqh principles, everything is halaal unless proven haraam - *EXCEPT* for matters of worship, where the opposite holds true: any innovation in worship is haraam or bid'ah until proven otherwise. Thus, Asmaa's classification of tasbeeh as bid'ah is more sound than your judgement that it's not.

Here's a wee analogy:
- The best Muslim (person, even) was the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), correct?
- Ergo, the best way of worship was that performed by the Prophet Muhammad, correct?
- Thus, following the Prophet's (peace be upon him) way of worship will ultimately bring you closest to Allah, and the best reward, correct?
- As I recall, the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to do Tasbeeh with his right hand. Furthermore, he encouraged this. Thus, wouldn't you rather gain the reward of following the Prophet's way, whilst also steering clear of doubtful matters?
- As for the matter of keeping count, it is easy to do so if you follow the joints of each finger (3 per digit, 5 digits X2).

You may also recall the similarity of the tasbeeh to the rosary, and the general advice to avoid imitation of non-believers.

Wallahu ta'aalah A'lam

p.s: sorry Asmaa for the digressing spiel

Another very unrelated comment:

Remember when I was telling you about a button someone made for me and we spent way too long looking at pictures and I couldn't find it ... well this is it.

That's weird ... they don't allow HTML tags.

Umar, you're face is a bid'ah.

Olde, You're so great. Thanks, now I don't have to respond to all these bid'ah comments.
