ADD?

Right. Sometimes I think that I have some kind of developmental disorder. For example, I have trouble doing the readings for my courses. I'm just not motivated in the least. I've tried reading at home in my room, and with the door locked - it doesn't work, I just end up thinking about how I'm missing my favourite show on the Food Network or how I have to organize all of my receipts or some such nonesense. I've tried the library near my home - this past Sunday, I read 30 pages in 3.5 hours. I just kept staring out the window: "my, what a windy day it is." I've tried school - but I get distracted by people I know, my stomach grumbling, my sudden urges to call up friends for no reason, etc. Suggestions would be helpful. Then again, Alhamdulillah :)

You're definitely not alone on this one, Asmaa.

How about that conservative minority government?

I'm sure a lot of us can relate to your plight.. but dang, I swear I very recently did 30 pages of readings in about 3 hours too!
It's the window.. never sit near a window.

p.s. I'm pretty sure it's not ADD, I think it's called P-R-O-C-R-A-S-T... hey what's that in the window!

I'm actually having my finals and I've had to go through this stage a couple of times, best thing to do -if your not against music- have ur favourite tracks playing in the background- then you wouldn't think of stepping outta ur room and keep on reading just to hear them all.
Hope it works.

Sara, I know, but sometimes I feel like I am alone and everyone else is doing a fantastic job at school. Conservatives: no comment!

Who-made, yes, windows are evil. That made me laugh, thanks nerd.

Biotextrecruit, I've tried that, the words distract me even more! I've tried listening to songs in languages that I can't understand also, but then I try to figure out what the singer is saying :S

Umar, you are the epitomy of procrastination.

I don't how this is going to help you with your secular studies. However, it is very helpful for our deenie stuff...

it's very polemic in its content though...

As for reading... if i am hooked on a book... i won't put it down until i am done... i will even miss sleep just to complete it... my problem is with writing essays... alhamdulillah i am fine on the reading front...

My advice to you is save all your readings for a week before the exam so that it's fresh in your mind. Don't start now. Just do what you have to do now like essays etc. That's what I always do and it always makes for the best results :D

It's a type of procrastination that works!

Hahaha, I'm never doing a fantastic job in school - and you can always count on that fact to make you feel better.

hahaha.... asmaa, i just realized how my original comment was a perfect example of what you just blogged about.

anyways, that thing is on my page now, so check it out.

oh, and maybe I should point out that I did my Islamic Civilization essay the day before it was due and got a 70 (which was pretty good, since the highest was a 72) and the exam for the class, well... I never really did much of the readings until a few days prior to the exam date (and even then, I didnt do all of 'em.. only what I thought was important) and I got an A.

Just goes to show you that procrastination does work... atleast for me.

Anis, if I'm hooked on a book, then yeah, I can't put it down either. But I have issues with my heavier course-related material. In any case, probably the most useful advice anyone has given me so far. Thanks :)

Aaliya, haha I always do that! Except my test was today and I started reading on Monday :S It's okay, it's over for the time being.

Sara, I actually do feel better knowing that >:P

Umar, man you're slow. And by the way, psht, 70 isn't good even if the highest mark was 72. The question my dad would ask me: then why weren't you the one who got 72, bheti?! Okay, maybe not the bheti part :P

Ahy, thanks so much for the polite motivation.

Steve, hehe, I still don't think I'd be motivated. I'd just say: "well, you're wrong and I'm right and there's nothing you can do about it."
